Including a fun and eclectic group of eight original songs, this country/folk/pop album was recorded on Bruce's home computer. New versions of both "99 Miles to Philly" and "It Wasn't So Long Ago," are available on Bruce's new album, "Ride the Open Road."
Both the title track, "Just Me and My Gibson Guitar," and the second track, "99 Miles to Philly," are upbeat, driving songs that channel Gilbert's inner "John Prine." Gilbert shows his sentimental side in "Life and You (Just Seem to Get Along Like Old Friends)," co-written by Gilbert with his daughter, Molly Gilbert Zulauf, and her husband, Ben Calder Zulauf, and in "It Wasn't So Long Ago," a sweet tune about Gilbert's three daughters. He pays a fine tribute to the bubblegum era group, Herman's Hermits. He sounds Dylan-ish on "Hey Little Baby." And the eight song album is rounded out with "Tony Maroni," a dark take on the kids' song that Gilbert wrote (but never recorded) many years ago, and with an upbeat, fun Christmas song called "Christmas is a Time For No School."
